The ShinShinim program brings young Israeli ambassadors into Jewish life across British Columbia, creating meaningful, personal connections between Israel and our communities.
ShinShinim (short for shnat sherut, or “year of service”) are Israeli high school graduates who choose to spend a year volunteering in Jewish communities around the world. During their service year, they live and work within the community, building relationships that deepen Jewish identity, understanding, and connection.
As part of our priorities, Federation partners with the Jewish Agency for Israel to host ShinShinim here, strengthening meaningful connections and reinforcing the bond between Israel and Jewish life across the province.
Jewish Federation of British Columbia offers financial support to help youth and young adults take part in educational programs in Israel. These scholarships are made possible through community support via the Federation Annual Campaign and grants from the Jewish Community Foundation.
Reflecting Federation’s role as the umbrella organization for Jewish life across British Columbia, ShinShinim engage with communities throughout the province.
In collaboration with local organizations, schools, camps, synagogues, and community connectors, ShinShinim help ensure that Jewish communities of all sizes feel connected, to Israel, to one another, and to the broader Jewish diaspora.
During their year in BC, ShinShinim take part in a wide range of community and educational experiences.
Supporting Jewish day schools and supplementary schools.
Engaging teens and young adults through youth programs.
Participating in Jewish holidays and community events.
Visiting regional communities to build relationships and support local programming.
Sharing contemporary Israeli life, including its culture, language, diversity, and complexity.
Forming personal connections rooted in shared Jewish values.
ShinShinim bring energy, authenticity, and lived experience into Jewish spaces across BC. They help make Israel accessible and personal, spark meaningful conversations, and strengthen Jewish engagement across generations.
At the same time, the ShinShinim gain a deeper understanding of Jewish life in the Diaspora, forming lasting connections with our community.
Jewish Federation plays a central role in anchoring the ShinShinim program locally. We coordinate placements, support host communities and families, strengthen partnerships to ensure the program aligns with our strategic priorities, including Israel & Overseas engagement and vibrant Jewish life across the province.
By investing in ShinShinim, Federation helps create living bridges between Israel and Jewish communities throughout British Columbia, strengthening our collective future, one relationship at a time.
ShinShinim come to BC to serve our community, and we play an important role in helping them feel at home. There are many meaningful ways to be part of their experience while they are here.
We are looking for families who can be a “family away from home.” This does not require full-time hosting. Families can invite them over weekly or bi-weekly to share a meal, share time together, or simply provide a warm, relaxed place to unwind, recharge, and feel at home.
We encourage community members to invite ShinShinim to everyday and special experiences, such as hockey or soccer games, skiing or snowshoeing, or spending time with families in the Lower Mainland. These shared moments help them connect to life in BC beyond their volunteer roles.
Providing a home-cooked meal, whether through a MealTrain or informal drop-off, can make a big difference.
Families can host ShinShinim for a Shabbat dinner or a Jewish holiday meal, offering them the chance to experience local traditions and feel part of community life.
