Three people pose together for a photo: a man in a suit with glasses, a woman in a floral dress, and a man in a suit with a yellow tie.

This past Monday brought a moment of profound relief: Edan Alexander, an American-Israeli citizen, was finally reunited with his parents and two siblings after enduring more than 580 harrowing days in captivity.

For his family and Jews around the world, this long-awaited homecoming came after months filled with uncertainty, fear, and unwavering hope. Now, Edan is home, embraced by those who never stopped believing and never stopped advocating for his release.
And yet, even in this moment of joy, our hearts remain heavy. Many families are still waiting, still praying for the safe return of their loved ones.

Some stories shine through even the darkest moments—and Yuval Raphael's is one of them.

After surviving the Nova Festival massacre by pretending to be dead for eight hours, she’s now representing Israel on the global stage at Eurovision. There’s still time before Shabbat to show your support—head to www.esc.vote or use the Eurovision app to vote (you can vote up to 20 times!). Let’s help Yuval feel the love and show the world what resilience and unity really look like.

As we continue to demand the return of the hostages, I had the opportunity to visit the Nova Music Festival Exhibition in Toronto.

October 7th remains etched in our collective memory. Walking through the exhibit—surrounded by powerful images and deeply personal artifacts—I was struck by the lives so tragically cut short, including Ben Mizrahi z”l, a cherished member of our community.

It was a sobering experience that underscored the importance of remembrance and the responsibility we all share to honour their memory. In quiet moments like these, the strength of community and the need for unity shine through.

Speaking of community, our partner, King David High School (KDHS), marked a remarkable milestone—20 years of L’dor v’dor in action at their Golden Thread Gala.

The evening was a beautiful celebration of a school that has been shaping the next generation of Jewish leaders for two decades. Since its founding in 2006, the school has proudly graduated 926 students, including the 45 set to graduate in just a few weeks. They have taken 450 students to Israel and are working to ensure every student gets that experience.

Mazel tov to King David on their 20th anniversary—and on their unwavering commitment to academic excellence, community values, and Jewish continuity.

The evening also marked a bittersweet farewell to a beloved figure in our community: Alex Monchamp, "Mr. Mo," deputy head of school. He is departing after 20 years of service. With wisdom, humour, and heart, he has made an indelible impact on countless young lives. We are grateful for all that he has given, and we wish him the very best on his journey ahead.

We continue to celebrate our heritage with vibrant events across BC.

The Festival of Jewish Culture on Sunday, May 25th, is packed with activities—from creative workshops and Krav Maga to live music. Hosted by the Jewish Community Centre (JCC), it’s a fun and meaningful way to celebrate Jewish culture together.

We’re also bringing community experiences to our regional communities. Next week, come together for an uplifting evening of Israeli dancing with Mariano Marianoff in Squamish, Burnaby, and White Rock. These events are a wonderful way to strengthen our bonds and enjoy the richness of Israeli tradition. Check the community events here.

As we think about Jewish life in our community, it’s also worth asking—how are we welcoming those just starting their journey here?
Many of us remember what it felt like to be new—navigating unfamiliar streets, trying to build connections, and finding comfort in even the smallest acts of kindness. The Smiley Package, in partnership with Jewish Family Services (JFS) and Moving to Vancouver, helps welcome newcomers with warmth and care. Volunteers deliver small grocery packages across the Lower Mainland to support families during their first few days, offering connection, comfort, and a heartfelt start to their new journey.

Our Newcomers Program provides resources and events designed to offer guidance and support to individuals and families as they settle into their new lives in Vancouver. Take a look at the upcoming events below.
